Why do I see a message prompting me to “click to activate and use this control” when I roll my mouse over a Flash menu?   Top

Recent changes in Internet Explorer now cause it to display a double-dashed line and a popup tool tip "Click to activate and use this control" around JAVA applet, Flash presentations, and other active page content if the code is inline in your page HTML.

There is a way to avoid it using a small script (we have done the same with our online examples ( ).

Please visit the following link describing how to do it:

Macromedia has provide it's own solution to the above problem, although more complex, it might eventually be a better way of dealing with the problem, as their solution is more robust:

How to highlight submenu item   Top

You can pass a variable and make a specific menu be highlighted ( "open") when you load a page. To this add the variable "tab=" and the number of the menu you want to open. In the following example the third menu will be highlighted.

<object classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" codebase= ",0,28,0" width="738" height="185">
      <param name="movie" value="menu.swf?tab=3" >
      <param name="quality" value="high" >
      <param name="wmode" value="transparent">
      <param name="menu" value="false">
      <embed src="menu.swf?tab=3" quality="high" "" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="738" height="185" wmode="transparent" menu="false" ></embed>

In certain pages, I want a submenu to open automatically. How can I do this?  Top

To make the menu open you should force the flash to go to a specific frame. It is a bit tricky to find the frame as it is different in every menu. You can do this using the following JavaScript code:

<script type="text/javascript">
var intervalId = setInterval ( 'checkLoaded()', 1000 );
function checkLoaded ( ){
if ( getFlashMovieObject(menuName) != null ){
var flashMovie=getFlashMovieObject(menuName);
clearInterval ( intervalId );
function getFlashMovieObject(movieName) {
if (navigator.appName.indexOf("Microsoft Internet")==-1) {
if (document.embeds && document.embeds[movieName])
return document.embeds[movieName];
} else {
return document.getElementById(movieName);

Replace the menuName="MyMenu" with the name you have given for you flash menu. In the following example the menuName is "MyMenu"

<object classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" codebase= ",0,28,0" name="MyMenu" width="517" height="150" id="MyMenu">
<param name="movie" value="Examples/Wild West.swf">
<param name="quality" value="high">
<param name="wmode" value="opaque">
<embed src="Examples/Wild West.swf" width="517" height="150" quality="high" wmode="opaque" "" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" name="MyMenu"></embed>

Can I use URL parameters to navigate (e.g. somelink.php?frame=details)?   Top

Yes, you can use any type of links as you did in the html <a href> tag. So, you can have querystring (e.g. somelink.php?frame=details) or even JavaScript calls like javascript:myfunction().

Is there a way to call a JavaScript when the user click an option from the menu?   Top

Yes, you can call a JavaScript using the Link textbox of a menu item. For example if you have the following javascript function that opens a pop up window:

<script language="javascript" type="text/javascript">
function openpopup(url) {,'name','height=200,width=150');
if (window.focus) {newwindow.focus()}

In html code to open the pop up when a user clicks on a link we will use the following:

<A HREF="javascript:openpopup('example.html')">Link to example</a>

In order to do the same with the an FMF menu, all you have to do is to add in the Link textbox of the menu or submenu the following code:
